1. What should I bring to Orientation if I am billeting?
Billeting means we’ll set you up with another first year student of the same gender who is living in residence, so you have somewhere to stay for the week. You’ll have to bring whatever overnight items you require: a sleeping bag, pillow, towel, toiletries, and clothes. You’ll want to bring comfortable footwear (running shoes are encouraged, since we often spend a lot of time walking around), and weather-appropriate clothing. You may want to bring something special to wear to the club night as well! Finally, it is a good idea to bring some extra cash, just in case!
2. What should I bring to Orientation if I am commuting?
Bring weather- and activity-appropriate clothing, sunscreen, and some extra cash, just in case!
3. Will I be provided meals all week?
Definitely! We will be serving you three meals a day for all six days! You may want to bring some extra cash though, just in case you get the opportunity to go for snacks during a free time period.
4. Should I bring money to Orientation?
It’s highly recommended that you bring some cash to Orientation, for emergencies and any random needs you may have.
5. Does Orientation involve hazing or initiations?
Absolutely not. Here at UC, we pride ourselves on being inclusive, diverse and equitable. We absolutely do not tolerate any hazing of any sort – frosh week here is very different than the movies!
6. If I indicated on my registration form that I didn’t need to billet, but have changed my mind, what do I do?
If you show up at Registration Day and let us know, we can definitely accommodate you. To ensure that we have a spot for you and make the process as smooth as possible, please try and fill it out on your registration form.
7. What is the alcohol policy?
University College Orientation 2010:License to Thrill is entirely alcohol-free.
8. What if Orientation isn’t within my price range?
We have made great strides to make sure everyone who wants to participate in Orientation will have the opportunity. If you require financial assistance, we offer Orientation bursaries through the University College Registrar’s Office. Just indicate on your registration form that you are interested, and the Registrar’s Office will contact you shortly thereafter.
9. What if I can’t make the first day, but still want to participate?
We can be quite flexible with late registrants. If you know you will miss the first day or so, please let us know ahead of time so we can arrange accommodations. We want everyone to be able to participate!
10. Will my dietary restrictions be met during Orientation?
All our meals offer vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options. We will also be providing food after sundown for frosh participants observing Ramadan during that time period. We will also be making ingredient lists available for all meals, to accommodate for those with allergies. If you have dietary restrictions, please let us know on the registration form.
11. Will my accessibility needs be met during Orientation?
We will do everything we can to make sure everyone who wishes to participate in frosh week has the opportunity. Please register before the first day of Orientation, and indicate on the registration form what accommodations you will require.
12. What is the food menu for the week?
There is a extensive menu for the entire week. Breakfast being served during the week includes bagels, eggs, yogurt, fruit, bacon, French toast, grilled cheese sandwiches, and more. The lunch menu includes pizza, subs, shawarmas, and more. The dinner menu includes pasta, Chinese food, BBQ food, greed food, and more.
13. Where should I come on the day of registration to either register for orientation week, or (for those who have already paid) pick up my lanyard and frosh kit? (September 6th, 9 am-10:30am)?
If you click on the image/map at the top of this page, it will enlarge. You want to come to the area marked “R”. If you are a resident student, your dons will help direct you to that area. If you are commuting via TTC, you will probably want to get off at St.George subway station (it will be easiest to find UC from that station). If you are driving, 15 King’s College Circle is the front of UC, and the Sir Daniel Wilson quad is just a little bit west of there.
14. If I am a commuter, and am planning on staying on residence, what details do I need to know beforehand?
We will try to match you up with a residence student willing to allow you to stay in their room for the week. You won’t know who this person is until after the registration event. If you do not stay in someone’s res room, we will reserve space for you to stay in the common rooms (which many people choose to do). In terms of what to bring, make sure you have running shoes, a towel, extra cash for snacks you’d like to purchase in between events (including Friday night dinner), and a full week’s worth of clothing as it will be a warm, activity filled week (you do get a frosh t-shirt which you will be required to wear at all events). It may be in your best interest to not bring a laptop if you were thinking about it. If you need computer access, the Robarts library is open starting on Tuesday for the rest of the week until 11 pm. The option of billeting is free of charge.
15. If I am a resident student, and would like to billet a commuter frosh, what details do I need to know beforehand?
You won’t be matched up with a commuter until after the registration event. You may decide then whether you would like to allow a student to stay in your room. Just to reassure anyone not sure whether to billet someone, we do match you up with someone of the same gender. It has never ever been a safety concern and has ended up working out quite well in terms of creating instant friendships.
16. If I cannot make the first day of Orientation, and need to pick up my lanyard (you have already paid) or need to register (you need to pay), where do I go?
We have one registration member in charge of registration for a particular day each week. If you’d like to register anytime on Monday AFTER the registration event, call Nick (416-671-0701). For Tuesday, call Shaun (416-209-0522). For Wednesday, call Jessica (416-587-8586). For Thursday, call Danni (416-721-0509). Otherwise, if you’re planning on being able to make it to the registration event, you do not need to call any of the above individuals.
If you have any other questions or concerns, please contact us at uc.orientation@utoronto.ca or just go to our “Contact Us” page for full details.
