Service Commission presents Fireball: A Night at the Circus

This year, the University College Literary and Athletic Society’s Services Commission is proud to present you with an elegant soirée of dinner, dancing, drinks and desserts, as well as a handful of magical performances, at the Fireball 2012: A Night at the Circus.

Right now, Fireball tickets are being sold for $30 for University College students, $35 for non-University College students, and $15 for alumni. You can purchase your ticket at the U.C. Lit office. Our office hours are from Monday to Friday, 10 am to 5 pm. We are also selling tickets in front of FUNG from Monday to Friday, 5 pm to 7 pm.

We will be selling them until the day of Fireball. Make sure to bring your ticket, your friends, and your glamerous look to Fireball!

Orientation 2012: Hiring Execs and Leaders!

Orientation is for most students the first impression that they have of our amazing college. It is up to the orientation team including co-chairs, executives, and leaders to ensure that the week is filled with amazing experiences that are never to be forgotten. What makes orientation so different at UC is the fact that it is designed to be a very empowering and inspiring experience. You have the freedom to make decisions based on your comfort level, and events are there to attend at your own leisure. What also makes orientation so special at UC is the amount of time, devotion, and spirit each co-chair, executive, and leader bring to orientation week. Orientation would not be at all possible without them.

Hey UC!!
Do you have a bunch old jeans lying around in your room just collecting dust. Never to be worn again because they are tacky or out of style. Have I got the solution for you!

From January 17th to the 31st the Lit will be hosting a Jean Drive and we need your jeans. Now that doesn’t mean running to your friend and pulling off his or her jeans, but if you must just say it’s for a good cause. It really is; we are partnering with Aéropostale and their “Teens for Jeans” campaign in hopes of collecting jeans for homeless youth. In addition, for giving us your gently worn jeans, we will reward you a 25% off coupon to buy even more jeans at Aéropostale. So guys and gals start looking through that pile of clothes on your bed and give us some of your jeans. Please and Thank You!

We will be going to Blue Mountain, one of Ontario’s best!

Ticket includes bus ride and lift ticket for the day.

The Undie Run Challenge

The Undie Run Challenge is a fun charitable event that works as follows:1) Everyone who wants to participate will agree to meet in the Junior Common Room (JCR) at University College at 2:00pm on January 26th 2012.2) Each participant is encouraged to wear as many layer…s of clothing, that they are willing to donate, as possible.

3) Upon arrival all participants will be asked to remove all the clothing they want to donate. The level of dress you are left with is completely up to you (preferably underwear). Obviously a level of “appropriateness” should be maintained.

4) After all the clothing has been collected students will run through a designated route on campus which may include public buildings like libraries. (The route has yet to be finalized)

5) After running participants will be welcome to return to the JCR for hot chocolate.

Notes of Interest:

All collected clothing will be donated to the Youthlink inner city drop-in centre, a very worthwhile cause.

Participants are welcome to bring extra clothing and leave it in the JCR as not to have to return home with no clothes on.

They may be considerable media coverage concerning the event and all participants should be aware of this.

THIS IS A REALLY GREAT AND WORTHWHILE EVENT. HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL THERE.

MMI Workshop directed by the Creator of the MMI

Thinking of applying to med school? Then you’ll definitely not want to miss this event! Come hear and learn about the MMI from one of the original creators of the MMI, Dr. Jack Rosenfeld!

If you’re asking, “What is the MMI?” this event is just for you! The MMI is the Mul…ti-Mini Interviews, the new interview process sweeping across schools of medicine across the world. Extremely different from standard interviews, the MMI allows interviewers to better evaluate the soft skills of candidates. Not only just used by med schools, but by a plethora of different disciplines (a full list at the bottom)!

Come to the event to learn more, gain a step up from everyone else applying to med schools, and have a chance to be interviewed by one of the creators himself in the MMI style! A Q&A session will also be included, light refreshments will be provided. Priority will be given to UC students, but all UT students are welcome to attend, so feel free to invite friends who you think this event would be useful towards!

“THE NEW EXCELLENCE”

AAMC President and CEO Darrell G. Kirch, M.D., delivered the following address at the association’s 122nd annual meeting in Denver, Colo., on November 6, 2011:

Across the country, you are showing that the “new excellence” in selecting future doctors lies not in simply moving up the scale in matriculant MCAT exam scores. Rather, you are developing better ways to identify the “best.” One example is the use of new interview approaches, such as the “Multiple Mini-Interview” developed at our Canadian AAMC member, the McMaster School of Medicine, and now being used by over two dozen of our member schools across the United States and Canada. As many of you know from personal experience, these interview scenarios allow us to probe dimensions ranging from applicants’ responses to novel situations to their reactions to an ethical conflict. I have seen the positive results from this new tool at institutions ranging from Stanford University School of Medicine to our new member, Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine.

The MMI system has been used for candidate selection in medical schools in Canada, the United States, Australia, England, the Middle East and the Far East. Other schools have used it for student admission purposes, including schools of pharmacy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, midwifery, dentistry, dental hygiene, veterinary medicine, ultrasound technology, nuclear medicine technology, X-ray technology, medical laboratory technology, and chiropody. Commercial institutions, as well as entrepreneurship programs, have also used the MMI system.
